Puzzle games

Puzzle games are where two players stop competing and start cooperating — or at least that is the theory. This shelf collects the thinking games in the catalog: the elemental duo classics where fire and water can never touch, pen-and-paper strategy rebuilt for the screen, and co-op escape runs where one player pulls the lever and the other one finally, finally walks through the door it opens.

The co-op half is built on asymmetric teamwork. One dinosaur is small enough to squeeze through gaps while the other is strong enough to push blocks; one panda climbs while the piggy pressure-plates; two prisoners split up to find keys in a robotic jail. The classics half needs no introduction: dots and boxes has ended more friendships over a single sneaky square than any shooter on this site, and drawing one sneaky line at a time remains the purest argument simulator ever invented. There are even co-op missions where the puzzle is how two heroes with guns get a hostage past a room full of zombies in one piece.

Every game here lists separate control schemes for the WASD player and the arrow-key player, works on phones with on-screen buttons, and saves you from any download whatsoever. Some levels will take two minutes; the sneaky ones will take twenty and one apology. The rule of the shelf is simple and old as tabletop gaming: when the level feels impossible, it is not the game that needs to change — it is the plan.

Solo thinkers are welcome too — most co-op levels can be walked alone by switching heroes, and every classic here offers an AI opponent with adjustable difficulty — but the shelf is at its best with a friend on the other half of the keyboard.

Controls never get in the way of the thinking: turn-based games share one mouse politely, real-time co-op splits the keyboard down the middle, and every page spells out who gets which keys before the arguing can start.
