About Dots and Boxes 2
The most dangerous game ever played in the margins of a school notebook, now running at full resolution. Two players take turns drawing single lines between neighboring dots, and the moment your line completes the fourth side of a box, the box is yours — along with the right to draw again. Fill the grid, count the boxes, and discover which of you has been doing quiet geometry homework all along.
Dots and Boxes 2 wraps the classic in the features the paper version always lacked: boards of several sizes, a scoreboard that keeps honest count, and an AI opponent with three settings, from gentle tutor to a cold-blooded closer. The endgame is where the real game lives — the moment the safe moves run out, someone has to open a long chain, and the other someone gets to eat all of it. Sacrificing two boxes to control the last chain is the difference between players who fill grids and players who win them.
It is turn-based, so it shares beautifully: one mouse, two thinkers, zero reflex requirements. A full board takes minutes, a grudge takes considerably longer.
How to play
| Desktop | Play entirely with the mouse: click the empty space between two neighboring dots to draw your line, and the turn passes automatically unless you completed a box. |
|---|---|
| Mobile | Tap between two dots to claim an edge. The board is sized for fingers, so a full game fits comfortably on a phone held sideways. |
Tips & tricks
- Early on, avoid creating a third side on any box — every open invitation eventually gets accepted.
- Count the dots left in a chain before opening it: a chain of three is a sacrifice, a chain of six is a disaster.
- The double-cross move — giving up two boxes to keep control of the final chain — is the entire secret of strong play.
- Against the hard AI, play for the endgame from move one: safe moves first, and let it make the first forced opening.
